Foundation drains (aka footing drains) are installed around homes foundation walls/footers to collect and move water away from the foundation. These drains are comprised of drainage pipe, drainage rock and a geotextile fabric that prevents dirt from clogging the drain. One of the other key benefits of foundation drains is it reduces hydraulic pressure on walls which left unchecked can stress a foundation wall into failing (aka bowing or falling inward).
Foundation drains can be installed inside or outside a home’s foundation wall/footer. Homes that have large amounts or hydraulic pressure pressing against foundation walls or homes that are considering exterior waterproofing should have exterior foundation drains installed. Homes what have very little access to the outside foundation walls or water problems coming from the basement floor should consider interior foundation drains.
Regardless of where the footing drains are installed, they need a place to drain the collected water. If possible, it is a good idea to drain exterior footing drains to daylight. This can only be done if there is a part of your surrounding property that is lower than the bottom of the foundation drain (gravity drainage). In other cases it is necessary to install a sump pump system.
A sump pump system contains a basin that collects water from the foundation drain. There is a mechanical pump installed in the basin that will pump out the water once the water in the basin reaches a certain height. The water that is pumped out of the sump pump needs to be expelled away from your home so none of that water goes back down into your foundation drain and recirculates.
