Catch basins (also known as drain boxes and face drains) are preconstructed drainage boxes that are installed in the ground to absorb storm/ surface water. Catch basins are most effectively used in localized areas that are subject to water ponding and/or moving surface water.
These drain boxes work like a shower drain. As soon as surface water moves on top of the drains grate, the water drops into the box and is transported through underground drainage pipe (attached to the box) where the water is released in a predetermined more desirable location.
Best practices promote the use of drainage rock and geotextile fabric underneath the catch basin to allow any left over water to drain out of the box.
Furthermore these drain boxes can be used in combination with a dry well system. Dry well systems are used in areas that are prone to water ponding but the surrounding yard has a higher elevations that makes it impossible to gravity drain captured water to another location. Dry wells are large underground areas that are excavated and filled with drainage stone and geotextile fabric. They are in essence a large underground holding area for surface water to drain to and slowly drain into the surrounding soil.
